Illuminating Tinian Island: The Lita 20W Pathway Lighting Project

Tinian Island, part of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, is about as far as it gets from a mainland electrical grid — which makes it a genuinely tough proving ground for outdoor lighting. When the island put out bids for new pathway lighting to cover its parks, trails, and building entryways, the results exposed a clear gap between solar systems built for a marketing brochure and ones built to survive a Pacific island's heat, humidity, and salt air.

The Challenge

Tinian's government split its pathway lighting needs across three separate bids. Two other systems installed on the island by competing vendors began failing within about five months, breaking down and corroding badly enough to need replacement — a costly outcome for public infrastructure meant to last years, not months, in a remote location where sourcing replacement parts isn't quick or cheap.

The Lita 20W Solution

Greenshine was awarded two of the island's three pathway lighting bids and installed its Lita 20W solar lighting system — a 14-foot pole-mounted fixture with pole-base battery housing, Dark Sky Friendly optics, and a luminaire delivering more than 130 lumens per watt of efficiency. Across Phase I and Phase II of the project, Greenshine deployed 77 Lita systems along pathways, park trails, and building entryways across the island.

Results and Impact

Why It Matters Beyond Tinian

Tinian is an extreme environment — heat, salt air, and humidity punish outdoor electronics fast, and a lighting system that can't handle it fails quickly and visibly, exactly as the competing installation did. Winning two of the island's three bids, and holding up well past the point competitors failed, is a useful data point for any project in a harsh coastal or island climate: the Lita 20W was built to handle exactly these conditions, and the island's own installation results back that up.
