Are Solar Parking Lot Lights Worth the Investment?

are solar parking lot lights worth the investment

You’re here because you want to know if solar parking lot lights are worth it.

Yes. That’s the short answer.

The longer answer? Read further, you’ll discover why they are.

Are Solar Parking Lot Lights Worth the Investment?

A lot of businesses and municipalities look at solar parking lot lights and wince at the up-front price tag. Typically, you’ll pay about 50% more for a solar light over a traditional light because of the additional solar components.

So, essentially, if a traditional grid-tie light costs 3,000, expect to pay about 4,500 for a solar light.

So you might be wondering how is a solar investment worth it?

The biggest hidden cost for a lighting installation is through the trenching for the lights. Feel free to do your research on how much it costs to trench and wire a light, but if you’d rather save yourself the time we’ve done the math.

Costs to trench and connect a single light can skyrocket the project price an extra 3,000 dollars per light, exceeding the total price of solar parking lot lights. Additional prices can add on, especially if the parking lot is already paved over.

Not only will you need to pay for labor to crack the pavement, but you’ll also need to block off that particular section of the lot from customers. During that construction time, you’ll need to find a place to relocate commuters.

Some places don’t even have the time or capability to block off parking lots for lights. We’re talking about a 2-week timespan to shut down a lot, forcing people to park elsewhere. Not ideal.

Plus, it’s unsightly. There’s a reason why construction sites are blocked off with opaque barriers. It’s to keep people out and to hide how it looks.

So, the benefits of solar lighting are worth the investment because you skip all that hassle. You skip the trenching, relocation, unsightly construction, and timespan of essentially shutting the lot down.

Plus, you save the money it would cost to perform all that hassle. One solar project saved the customer nearly half a million dollars.

So how long would it take to install solar lights in a parking lot?

With an average of roughly an hour per solar light, you can have an entire parking lot of 20 lights installed in a weekend, perhaps even in a single day depending on the lot and crew size installing them.

We don’t know anyone who likes getting bills (we sure don’t), but just like roaches, they don’t go away. Thankfully, through solar, you can get rid of your monthly energy bill. The annual cost of a ten-light system (HPS, metal halide, other techs) that doesn’t use renewable energy can cost around 1,500 dollars for energy usage.

Or, you could choose solar and pay 0 dollars annually. We’ll let you decide which you prefer.

The Environment

Green energy is all the rage recently. There’s an energy crisis on the horizon, and every day it gets closer to reality.

Using solar is a way to combat that. With no carbon emissions, nothing to burn, no power to consume (other than solar power, obviously), solar parking lot lights are worth the investment because they save companies and cities several thousands of dollars while reducing our overall carbon footprint.

Think of every public light across the world that uses energy on a nightly basis. It’s unfathomable how much energy is consumed every day, even for just public lighting.

Lighting contributes to 17% of our carbon footprint. That definitely adds to global warming and how severe our storms have become over the decades.

Investing in solar parking lot lights is worth it because you help contribute to the green initiative–saving energy for the future while protecting us and our environment.

Smile, You’re Getting Attention

A lot of municipalities have blazed a path towards going entirely solar. News stations and media outlets recognize efforts in going green. Another reason why buying solar parking lot lights as an investment is because it’s positive for the publicity of a business.

So, if you need more foot traffic (and some boosted revenue in turn), give solar a shot.

We here at Greenshine New Energy are experts at developing solar lighting systems for parking lots. With over 30 years of combined experience, we know how to light a lot properly using the most respected and trustworthy technology on the market. We use CREE LED fixtures to light whatever needed. The solar panels we use are highly-efficient monocrystalline silicon panels guaranteed to charge the batteries that power the parking lot lights.

best purchase on lighting

What’s the Best Purchase on Lighting?

best purchase of lighting

You’re probably here to find the best purchase on lighting. After all, that’s the title of this blog post. It just so happens we have insider information about how to save big bucks when it comes to lighting public areas and lots. We’ll admit that public lighting doesn’t get people of all ages and backgrounds lining up around the corner like movies do, lighting is never cheap. But we’ve got a way you can find the best purchase on lighting–it’s through solar LED light fixtures.

Want to learn how to save big bucks through this newfangled method of lighting? Here’s how:

Why Solar is the Best Purchase on Lighting

We know you’ve heard of solar power. You’ve probably even seen a solar power panel before, perhaps on a small calculator or even in public. Those small devices are neat, but where solar power really matters is in public lighting. The average price for a single public light fixture with its supporting pole is about 3 thousand dollars, not a price in everyone’s pockets.

However, a solar lighting system can often cost more. We’ll admit that upfront. A typical solar light with a pole can cost around 4.5 thousand dollars. But why would we admit to charging more upfront?

Because solar actually saves you money in the long run.

We’re sure you don’t like bills. We don’t like bills either, but they’re necessary for us to thrive. But imagine if you didn’t receive bills for public lighting for the entire life of the lighting system? We’d consider that the best purchase on lighting since you save money in the long run.

But that’s not all.

Whereas you save money in the long run, you can also save money on the day solar lights are installed. How is that possible?

It’s because a lot of public lighting systems connect to underground power. We’re sure you’ve seen those massive lighting poles stuck in the concrete bestowing light on a pathway. The secret they hide is all the wiring and power in the light fixture runs into the ground, away from sight.

It’s great for aesthetics, but not for pricing. Digging a trench for a light can sometimes cost more than the light itself.

With solar lighting, there’s no need for trenching. The expensive, time-consuming, and laborious effort of getting to the power grid beneath the ground doesn’t need to happen. Solar lights can be placed upon a concrete pedestal and then turned on to soak up energy from the sun. That’s just another one of the reasons they’re the best purchase on lighting.

Extra Benefits of Solar

It’s true that the largest benefits of solar lights are the many ways you can save money. However, we are talking about solar energy–it’s a fantastic method of powering something since it’s incredibly clean.

Were you aware that roughly 17% of the overall carbon footprint is because of lighting? That means all those streetlights that are powered 12 hours a day are contributing to carbon emissions that impact our health in profound ways.

But purchasing solar streetlights can help reduce that massive carbon footprint. You can set an example on your block for everyone to follow by being the first to make a health-conscious decision with public utility–while saving several thousands of dollars doing it.

That’s why we consider solar lights to be the best purchase for lighting. Save money, the environment, and your neighbors’ health. We think that’s a great deal.

At Greenshine New Energy, we know the ins and outs of lighting and can deliver a lighting simulation within 48 hours to show you how you can save more than just money. Contact us if you’re interested in learning more and have a wonderful week.

Congratulations to the 2019 Greenshine New Energy $1,000 College Scholarship Contest winner:

Lawson Smith, a student of the University of Georgia!

Entrants were asked to write an essay expressing how they think green energy technology will change in the next 30 years and what the impact on our lives will be.

We received many, many submissions from students in the U.S. and after much deliberation, we felt that Lawson’s essay was exemplary. There were so many other fantastic essays, but our team had to choose just one. We’ve published it here with his permission.

Thank you to all that submitted essays. Try again next year!

Lawson’s essay for the Greenshine Solar Street Light Contest:

The climate strikes during September of this year were extremely moving for me as an advocate of renewable energy. As I stood hand in hand with hundreds of my peers, I was extremely proud to be a part of a movement that provides hope for the future. I find myself in the unique position as a current college student to be part of a generation that has a chance to make a meaningful impact on the way energy is produced. As I continue to learn every day about the negative consequences of our reliance on fossil fuels, it is my hope and expectation that within the next 30 years renewable energy sources will be integrated into every phase of energy production.
We are all familiar with the effects of carbon emissions on climate change. An estimated 5,268 million metric tons of CO2 emissions can be directly linked to the energy industry, according to the U.S. Energy Information Association, which can have disastrous climate implications moving forward. However, many people fail to see the benefits that will directly impact the lives of everyday citizens. As a business major, I often encounter obstacles in discussing climate change with my peers, because the majority of the discourse today is entrenched in the massive idea of climate change, which can be a bit overwhelming. I find that green energy can be appealing even to the most skeptical climate change deniers when I appeal to the smaller-scaler, everyday problems people face such unemployment, utility expenses, and health. In discussing energy reform on these terms, I am confident that within the next decade there will be overwhelming support for clean energy productions.
The renewable energy sector is much more labor-intensive than the highly automated fossil fuel industry. As such, with the shift toward renewable energy that will take place within the next 30 years, more people will be able to find full-time, good-paying jobs. According to the National Solar Jobs Census, solar energy alone was responsible for 260,000 jobs in 2016, over 100,000 more than the coal industry, which has a much larger market share in the energy field. As renewable energy continues to gain market share over the coming decades, these employment discrepancies will continue to grow, and along with it will emerge a new middle class. People will have more money to spend and the economy will boom.
One major concern surrounding the switch to renewable energy is the misconception that it will be a lot more expensive than traditional forms of energy production. While it is true that renewable energy is costly on the front-end, just as with any major overhaul, the costs are offset by the savings earned down the road. The costs to produce green energy have dropped anywhere from 11 percent to 26 percent depending on the method, which now puts it in the same price range as oil and gas, costing around $0.05/kWh to $0.015/kWh according to Forbes. This decline has been a constant trend, and within the next few years, renewable energy will undoubtedly be cheaper to produce, which in combination with its increased price stability, as opposed to volatile fossil fuels, will easily offset the cost of implementation. Consumers will see these cost reductions on their energy bills, which will free up even more money for them to put back into the growing economy.
Yet another major benefit that will arise from the renewable energy revolution in the next 30 years will be an increase in public health. With life expectancy rates dropping for the first time in United States history, it is important to attack this problem from all angles, and energy production is a surprisingly significant factor. One Harvard study found that a combination of heart disease, neurological disorders, and cancer caused by coal consumption cumulates to cost an estimated $74.6 billion annually. The elimination of fossil fuels like coal and implementation of green energy will not only eliminate those harmful conditions but as a result, it will also lower health insurance prices, leaving even more money in the pockets of working families.
In addition to the overwhelming scientific evidence that energy production rooted in nonrenewable resources is killing our environment, they also keep everyday consumers from getting the added economic advantage of renewable energy. Not only will green energy save our economy in the next two decades by saving the climate, but it will also put money directly into the pockets of consumers and cause the market to flourish. I am so excited to be a part of this energy revolution, and cannot wait to see the world I am confident will exist in 30 years.

Congratulations Lawson!

how to save money on lighting

How to Save Money on Lighting for a Business (Hint: Use Solar)

how to save money on lighting

A recent beer brewery in our town had to shut its doors much to the dismay of several brewery fanatics. The bills surmounted and prices had to go up for the brewery, unfortunately, driving away some customers. Ends just couldn’t meet, and that’s the unfortunate situation for a lot of businesses. But the good news is that we have some secrets for businesses: we’ve got details on how to save money on lighting, and not just trivial sums of it either! How? Through the use of solar lighting. This 5-minute read lays it all out for business owners that need to trim the expenses. Believe it or not, lighting is heavily expensive! We’re here to help businesses succeed through reducing lighting bills. Read further to discover the treasure that solar lights hold.

Here’s How to Save Money on External Lighting

Determine What the Project Needs

If your business doesn’t have a previous building (ie you’re starting from an empty lot), some decisions are a little easier. To install lighting for parking lots, you’ll still need to trench and wire to connect each light. This is where lighting tends to be extremely expensive. Depending on the size of your lot, trenching and wiring fees can cost several thousands of dollars.

If the lot in question is already built, installation for traditional lighting would be even more difficult since you’d need to break into the concrete, trench for power, and then repave–that can tack on an even higher bill. So no matter what the situation is–whether it’s a new lot to pave over or an existing lot–solar lights are still perfect for the job. It’s more of a question of how many lights you’d need for full coverage and the type of light fixture. The most common for parking lots is a Type III, a very triangular light fixture that provides a lot of coverage.

Reduced Lighting Bills

“Zero” has a lovely ring to it

You’re probably already aware, but solar lights use the cleanest energy available: it’s from the sun! These lights don’t draw from fossil fuels or local utility companies, so your energy bills for your lights drop to zero. Solar is a fantastic way to save money on lighting since there’s no monthly energy bill to fork over.

Application of Solar Street Lights: A Wealth of Versatility in Modern Technology

application of solar street light

We’re sure you’re familiar with solar energy. It’s been used over the past several decades to power plenty of apparatus–calculators, watches, battery chargers, plenty of stuff. But what you may not realize is solar energy is being used in some of the most mundane (but necessary) technologies that we don’t even realize are around until they’re gone. Solar energy is fantastic in the application of solar street lights because it’s clean, abundant, and it helps people see when they’re not able to. This extensive introduction to solar LED lights will demonstrate the many ways that these modern marvels of technology are fantastic for any place that needs lighting. We’ve been in the business for decades and are prepared to show you how solar energy can turn dark places into shining examples of the future–how green energy saves money, protects us from harm, and reduces the carbon footprint for future generations. This 12-minute read is comprehensive, but we’ll make it just as entertaining as it is informative! Read on!

The Application of Solar Street Lights: Many Ways to Light Up the Night

Parks and Recreation

It wasn’t even a year ago that a lighting project in Phillips Landing, located in Laurel, Delaware became a strong example of how solar LED lights can really pack a punch for parks and recreational areas. A nature park a little distant from neighboring communities was in desperate need of rejuvenation. A lot of boaters and fishers would commute to the area in the early hours of the morning to get their catch for the day, but they were always hampered by darkness since there wasn’t sufficient lighting in the area. Flashlights helped, but something centralized and stronger was needed for the boat ramps for the nature park. After much deliberation, city and park officials banded together to revamp the park amenities. They turned to Greenshine for a solution.

It turns out the lights that Greenshine installed were a perfect application of solar street lights for the nature park. The nearest power source for the park was about a mile away, and trenching for power just wasn’t a viable option practically nor financially. The project was reaching over a million dollars already, and so cost-effective solutions were on the radar. The lights needed to be self-sufficient and free of ties to the power grid. Greenshine’s Brighta Type III solar LED lights were a perfect match for the park. They allowed commuters to go out on their boats early in the morning and return with ease. Imagine trying to launch a boat in the darkness–not the easiest task! But with Greenshine’s help, commuters can safely attend the park and fish if so desired.

One of the largest benefits of using solar LED lights in a park setting is because of park beautification. When archaic, traditional lighting fails, solar is the best option. The reason is that digging into park grounds can be an unsightly thing. But don’t take our word for it–here’s some proof!

application of solar street lights

The photo above is of a project to install a stoplight–not exactly the same application, but the idea is the same. The light company had to dig into the sidewalk and re-pave over it, then place hazard cones in the area so people would avoid the dangerous spots. Imagine that kind of look in a park! That’s why proper street light application is prime for parks (or really any environment)–it keeps the grounds looking fresh instead of paved over from recent installations!

It’s a no-brainer that lights help with security. We’re sure you want your cars parked in brightly-lit areas, and that’s why we’ve developed lighting systems specifically meant for parking lots–another great solar light application. These lights, highly tuned and specified to blip on at specific times, boast an extremely high color rendering index (80) so that more natural light hits the illuminated subject. What does this mean for security? Under an HPS lamp, a red car tends to look black! The high CRI for LED lights reveals more natural color, so in the event of an incident that compromises security, visibility isn’t lost.

In addition to a high rendering index, solar street lights can be paired with motion sensors and cameras to add to high security in remote locations. In the event that motion is detected from a sensor, the solar lights can instantly turn to full brightness and capture the object in motion–whether it’s a critter or criminal. That’s just another street light application that really “shines,” pun intended. A recent project that Greenshine completed was a parking lot in a loading zone for Siemens. Vandals roamed the area and were stealing some equipment. After we installed several Brighta light systems, the vandals relocated. The lighting system boosted security in the area saving the corporation several thousands of dollars from theft and property damage. Plus, the company saved even more–65 thousand dollars to be more specific–since they didn’t need to break into the concrete for light installation. It’s one of our most successful projects to date since it demonstrated how versatile these solar lights can be.

Several weeks ago, Los Angeles International Airport suffered a major power outage and the backup generators failed! Such an extreme power mishap like that doesn’t happen often, but it’s good to know that there’s technology around that operates without reliance on a power grid if the grid were to fail (since it did). That’s just another street light application that fits perfectly with airports–although there were many other problems that the terminals faced, having a set of solar LED lights would have been a strong idea for the area since it left commuters and traffic in the dark–literally! Unfortunately, there weren’t such lights available for the airport at the time so crews had to work for several hours straight restoring power for guests and commuters.

What works great for airports are also mobile solar towers. These can be easily wheeled anywhere on terminal grounds to bring light where there typically isn’t. When not in use, they can be wheeled back to their origin and then left in the sun to recharge–or left out for a semi-permanent lighting solution. These behemoth towers take the energy from the sun and re-use it in the LED lamps on top of the tower. Built with the most technologically-advanced Cree XPG-2 LED bulbs on the market, mobile solar towers are built to illuminate and last.

Another airport project in Santa Monica that Greenshine knocked out recently was the replacement of an archaic lighting system for Santa Monica Airport. Their system of parking lot lights was failing and in horrible disrepair. The light pedestals were still in place, but the wiring system underground needed to be replaced. Not with solar! The installation job was incredibly quick since the poles worked well with the pedestals in the parking lot. It saved the customer gobs of money and time. It’s just another street light application that works perfectly.

We couldn’t be more excited to get a phone call or lead when it comes to a construction project. Why? We’ve served plenty of customers over the years with solar LED lights. Lighting during construction can be quite costly, especially if you need a generator that burns fossil fuels, needs constant maintenance, requires refueling, and causes several cases of tinnitus for nearby workers. Construction sites don’t need generators for lighting, especially when it comes to solar! Skip the loud noises and constant upkeep–set up a portable solar light and forget about maintenance for the next five years. Move the light with a forklift wherever you might need it to work in bright, uninterrupted light. Another recent project, parking lot lighting for Lake Elsinore, needed temporary lighting for their construction projects. Not only did our lights provide a large illumination spread for working, but they also deterred the vandalism of their emergency response vehicles and other equipment–crime dropped to zero incidents. This application of solar street lights was one of the most successful for Greenshine–it stands as an exemplary project for our lights since the city used them in multiple ways to illuminate grounds and keep equipment as safe as possible.

Greenshine recently had a project where residents of Gila River were against any kind of digging–the installation grounds ran into peoples’ yards and having a crew dig into the dirt just wouldn’t have worked. Plus, they wanted a lighting fixture that looked highly similar to the older lighting systems in the area. Greenshine provided a Lumina system that met their needs, saved them money, and kept the grounds from ugly trenching. It’s projects like this that really matter–meeting all needs and keeping areas safe for residents at all hours of the night. application of solar street light

Mailbox and Canopy Lighting

Solar LED lights work anywhere for whatever reason needed! Another one of our recent lighting projects was solar lighting for mailboxes at Camp Pendleton. Residents weren’t able to see their mailboxes at night for their homes, and since the area was already built trenching to connect power for a lighting system would have restricted access to important email and would block people from parking in their own spaces. Plus, the bill would have been several thousands of dollars more! The most feasible solution for Camp Pendleton was to install solar mailbox lighting so residents could properly see their mail–and get to it too! The project managers and residents were heavily pleased with the result.

Solar lights fit in those odd categories of lighting–we’ve even installed lights for busy bus stops in the past. These projects, although not as common, represent unique ways of how solar street lights can be applied and how they operate in virtually any environment. Plus, their aesthetic design blends in with residential environments, adding a touch of lovely decor. You won’t get ugly technological contraptions installed to light up the area!

Yes, Greenshine has even installed solar lighting on military bases! China Lake needed a new lighting system since their old wiring had failed, and the closest connection was too far to draw power from–the project costs would have been through the roof! The lights in question were meant to illuminate fighter jets for display–an awesome sight to behold at night! Greenshine was able to install 6 Supera lights in the area to illuminate the jets. Not only that, the military base reduced its overall carbon footprint and saved several hundreds of dollars from energy usage–on top of the costs saved from trenching! Just another perfect way that solar street lights can be applied to get the job done, making all parties happy.

LED lights are harmful

Dispelling Myths that LED Lights are Harmful

LED lights are harmfulWe’re sure you’ve seen around the web some articles concerned with the technology behind LED lights and how they are (or can be) harmful. Technology can always be a scary thing, but it’s important to understand why such information is circulating and how to get to the facts. In this day and age where fact-checking is imperative, Greenshine is giving you the facts with details. It may be the case you’ve read somewhere that LED lights are harmful to the eyes or terrible for the environment. That couldn’t be further from the truth, and here’s why:

LED Lights are NOT Harmful: The Facts Why

Radiation Ain’t a Thing

Much akin to a parent telling a child not to stick their face too close to a television (which is harmful), there may be a rumor that looking at an LED light is terrible for the eyes and emits too much radiation to be safe. The fact is LED lights emit no UV, infrared, or polluting radiation because of their super-low voltages. They contain no mercury or sodium that require special handling. That’s particularly why Greenshine advocates the use of LED lights in the application of solar street lights. They’re the “greenest” bulbs for use in any public lighting, and that’s been the case for decades. LED lights are not harmful (as per law) and can be safely disposed of in landfills. We definitely aren’t claiming LED lights are perfect (no bulb will ever be), but wouldn’t you rather take the best you can get with what’s available? That’s specifically why Greenshine uses Cree LED light fixtures for all projects. Not only are you getting environmentally-friendly bulbs that are safe to use, but you’re also getting the best brand available within that space.

Waste is a Thing of the Past (Almost)

Consider how often some bulbs or lamps need to be replaced. High-pressure sodium (HPS) bulbs need to be replaced every 24 thousand hours or so. That’s less than half of the lifetime of standard LED bulbs, which means LEDs need less frequent disposal with their 50 thousand hours of operation time. Less waste equals a stronger environment. Plus, without high mercury or sodium levels, an LED bulb has a significantly smaller environmental footprint. Just toss the LED after 11 years–you can’t quite do that properly with other light technologies though. Just another reason why LED lights are not harmful–even though some rumors may say otherwise.

Do LEDs Emit Too Much Blue Light?

Blue light tends to come up in conversations discussing whether or not LEDs are harmful for us. It’s a fact that blue light stimulates what’s called melanopsin, a hormone directly related to how “alert” we feel. That’s typically why walking outside on a sunny day tends to wake people up–there’s so much blue light that the hormone hits us heavy. That’s the concern with using LED lights late at night. The blue light may cause melanopsin to activate, thereby keeping us more alert when we need the opposite.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to blue light exposure and how it may impact our health, such as the light intensity, type of light, time of night the light is used, and how long you’re exposed to it. We’ll admit that using LED lights do emit some level of blue light, but it depends on how you’re exposed. If you’re under a solar LED light for only a few minutes, there won’t be as much of an impact as if you’re under several LED lamps while fixated on a screen. Rest assured that LED lights will have minimal effect on one’s ability to sleep as long as the hours of exposure are managed. 30 minutes in blue light? You needn’t worry. Three hours in blue light? You may see a drop in effective sleep, but there’s not much to be concerned about. 10 hours in blue light exposure? We wonder how you spend your time.

Flicker Bad?

LEDs have a reputation for flickering. It’s so fast that we aren’t able to perceive it, but that kind of bulb behavior can be associated with headaches, eye strain, fatigue, and other health problems. However, if your lamps are flickering, it’s a sign that you’ve purchased poor-quality LEDs. Cree LED light fixtures are established in the lighting realm as some of the highest-quality, most innovative lights on the market. Flickering is a sign that your purchase wasn’t a wise one. It’s commonly said that you get what you pay for. When it comes to lighting, don’t go second best. Flickering happens, but not with quality. That’s just another misconception that LED lights are harmful.

The Verdict

We don’t want false information circulating about lighting. It’s an important aspect for businesses and municipalities to get quality lighting for wherever it’s needed, but it’s also important that you’re well-informed about lighting in order to make the smartest decision possible when it comes to your project. At Greenshine, we know a thing or three about lighting and refuse to offer anything less than industry-standard lighting–it’s our way of demonstrating that this myth that LED lights are harmful is far from the truth. But don’t take our word for it–drop us a line and we’ll tell you plenty more about how you can benefit from our lights if you’re in the market to improve your business or city.

How Does Solar Power Lighting Work?

solar power light and solar lighting

So perhaps you’re in the market for solar power lighting, and you’re curious about how it works. You’re in luck! Greenshine New Energy has a collection of over 30 years in solar lighting experience, and we’re here to give you the details on how this technology has surpassed regular lighting methods. This 5-minute read will give you a brief overview of solar energy, how it works, and how it can solve problems of expensive lighting.

How Solar Powered Lighting Works

The Tech Without the Jargon

We’ll skip out on the super techy stuff. Solar power is generated directly from the sun’s rays striking a thin wafer that’s (usually) made from silicon. The silicon is prepared in a vat either by heating it directly (poly-crystalline) or by drawing out a purer silicon ingot (mono-crystalline) through a process called the Czochralski process. Either of these kinds of solar cells (commonly referred to as photovoltaics) is great for use, but mono-crystalline panels are more efficient for solar power lighting. Sunlight strikes the panel and excites electrons in the silicon, thus generating power. The power is stored inside of a lead acid deep-cycle gel battery.

Solar lights at dawn solar lights power in the morning solar lights at dusk

solar lights at night

When it comes to the actual light connected to the solar panel, sensors in the light fixture determine when the sun goes down. The light fixture blips on. From a functional standpoint, it’s pretty simple. When coupled with an LED fixture that uses minimal energy, there’s a win-win since the light fixture draws minimal power and the solar panel power exceeds the drain from the light. It’s one of the cleanest, most reliable forms of renewable energy available. Solar power lighting is turning into a standard across the US. That’s just the basics of how solar lighting works.

There are a lot of newer technologies available right now that are exciting to the world of solar, but they’re not really ready for full commercialization yet. For instance, some solar cells are made from perovskite and have higher efficiencies than silicon, but unfortunately, perovskite cells use gold in their construction–we’re sure the price point on those cells are pretty high. A lot of similar technologies use a substance called Cadmium which is actually highly toxic and difficult to dispose of. We tend to prefer saving the environment when it comes to using solar technology, so that’s why Greenshine adheres to using silicon-based cells. They’re the most efficient on the market per dollar since the technology has been well-researched and prepared for mass marketing. Plus, it’s a lot more environmentally sound than other lighting and solar technologies. Several lamps carry mercury or similar chemicals that require specific handling for disposal.

More Cluck for the Buck

Our number-one question on phone calls is: How much does solar power lighting cost? We won’t hide the truth–on a per-light basis, solar lights are definitely more expensive. You can expect to pay about 50% more on a solar light as opposed to a sodium-based light. So out-of-pocket, one sodium light will cost about 3 thousand dollars, whereas a solar light will cost 4.5 thousand dollars. However, you’ll save long-term, and here’s why:

Zero Energy Bills

Since solar power lighting doesn’t pull power from a local power grid, you’ll save long-term since you don’t receive monthly power bills. But how much? Good question. Here’s a breakdown of specific light costs:

A High-Pressure Sodium Light running about 4 thousand hours a year will cost you a little more than 400 dollars to operate. Mercury Vapor will cost about the same. A Compact Fluorescent (CFL) light will cost about 6o dollars a year, while a Metal Halide will cost 80 dollars a year, all using the national average of 10.05 cents per kwH. A solar power light will cost you zero annually. It’s nice not receiving an energy bill! It’s akin to driving a car and not having to pay for gas.

Zero Trenching Bills

With traditional lighting, every light needs to be connected to an underground energy grid. To connect each light, you’ll need to hire a company to trench. With a standard ten-light system, trenching can add on 30 thousand dollars, easily taking a modest price tag into expensive territory.

Trenching for solar power lighting costs zero. We’re sure plenty of others prefer paying zero as well.

Does Solar Power Lighting Work Anywhere?

Remember, solar lights work by pulling light from the sun. Even if the panels are obscured by overcast skies, they’ll still develop some power. There are solar panel arrays in Antarctica that are attached to a research facility. These arrays are capable of producing 10% of the facility’s power in the middle of the darkest environments on Earth. If that isn’t a testament to the power of solar, we aren’t sure what is. Greenshine has several thousand installations across the US, some even in rainy and typically overcast areas. It works as long as the lights are positioned to get some sun.

Extra Benefits

You’ll never need to worry about power outages since each light operates on its own power and isn’t dependent on a central source. If for some reason, the light pole needs to be removed, it’s a lot less hassle to lift the light via a crane than trench again for the light and disconnect it from power. Some models of solar power lighting are even movable by forklift or just two people, so if your project requires lights in different spots, rest assured that you can relocate specific models of these lights whenever you need. Plus, sometimes cities and businesses get media attention from going solar. It’s not only great for the environment, but it’s also a big hit with certain generations.

We’re happy you could stick around to learn about how solar power lighting works. As the nation’s leader in solar lighting, we’re prepared to have our engineers huddle together and develop the most cost-effective lighting system for whatever your needs are. Can’t afford to trench? Solar is your answer. Need lights that can move at the drop of a hat? We’re your go-to. Need some lights to keep your grounds secure? What’s the Best Kind of Canopy or Shelter Lighting for the Money?

solar canopy lighting

When you’re out shopping for a product, we’re sure you want something that ticks all the checkboxes–something convenient and easy to work with that fits your needs perfectly but doesn’t sap your vacation money. That’s a kind of universal desire across all markets, and the price is probably the most important aspect for any purchase. The same goes for lighting projects. Although lighting doesn’t attract a crowd or go viral like a cat video would, nobody would mind saving a few dollars here and there when they’re deciding on a purchase for an expensive lighting project.

But what if we said you could save several thousands of dollars?

If you’re in the market for canopy lighting, you stopped at the right place. Greenshine New Energy specializes in high-quality, commercial-grade lighting for a range of purposes–mostly just to see things in bright light when the sun isn’t up. But the secret we’ve got is that we use solar canopy lighting to save you money. Let’s dive into the facts about lighting paired with solar panels that take advantage of renewable energy.

Why Solar Canopy Lighting is Much Cheaper

It’s a no-brainer that solar lighting pulls power from the sun–that’s one of the reasons why this unique lighting is much cheaper. You don’t have to concern yourself with monthly energy bills that sap away your food budget. A typical high-pressure sodium (HPS) light will cost you about 10 dollars per month for operation, whereas a solar canopy light will cost you…well, nothing. Each light doesn’t draw power from the main power grid, and so rest assured you won’t have constant monetary upkeep. With a system of 10 HPS lights, the energy costs leap to 6 thousand dollars over the course of 5 years.

One of the largest pain points we’ve seen from several thousands of projects we’ve installed is the cost for trenching and wiring. Lights on average can cost about 3,500 dollars a pop, but connecting them can nearly double your entire bill. Let’s assume a 100-foot trenching from the main power source must be dug with poles that are spaced 80 feet apart. Just for 10 lights the cost for trenching tacks on about 35 thousand dollars. Plus, if your project is being installed in an area with concrete already in place, that adds on additional expenses just to break up and repave the concrete. Or, if you prefer, skip all that and go with solar.

Isn’t a Solar Panel Much More Expensive?

It used to be! Early solar cells were not worth the investment, but since the 1970s the tech behind photovoltaics has pushed that price tag to lower numbers. The price of a solar cell in the 1970s was about 75 dollars per watt of energy converted.

Curious to know what today’s price per watt is? About 75 cents.

We won’t hide the truth–buying solar canopy lighting is more expensive, but in 5 years you’ll be happy with the savings. Take the several thousands of dollars saved and invest it. Retire early with a lavish retirement party. Buy yourself some “I made the best decision” gifts. That’s just a side benefit of purchasing the best kind of lighting for the money that you’ll find at Greenshine.

What Else Do You Save?

Greenshine uses LED light fixtures on all our systems. How does this benefit you? A lot of competing light fixtures have lifespans that pale in comparison to LED. HPS fixtures will last approximately 25 thousand hours. LEDs outlive HPS lights with a whopping 50 thousand hours. So when expensive (and toxic!) HPS fixtures burn out, your LED lights will shine on for another 25k hours. The secret is within the fantastic development behind LEDs that’s taken decades to develop. Now we use LEDs to light up the night and make the responsible financier smile at the money saved instead of frown at a lengthy bill. You also save the environment, too! Every solar canopy light uses 0 energy from fossil fuels. Kind of a package deal if you ask us.

Is Solar Power Reliable?

It’s just as reliable as the sun rising and setting. When the sun no longer rises, renewable energy sources will be the least of our problems.  As for now, rest assured that the 5000+ projects we have across the United States that are within their life expectancy are doing their jobs well. For areas that use solar shelter or canopy lighting in generally overcast environments, we develop robust systems that combat the darker skies so your lights won’t burn out of energy. All projects comply with the “Buy American” act, meaning at least 51% of materials are resourced in the United States. We stand by our products with a conviction–they’re highly efficient, incredibly bright, and easy on the wallet long term. Take a look at our case studies on solar canopy lighting if you’re still not convinced–some of them saved our customers nearly half a million dollars.

What are the Benefits of LED Lights?

solar street lightingThe energy crisis for the modern age is no laughing matter; now that people are being more “green” than ever, it’s important to find methods of energy consumption that provide adequate or similar results while slashing energy bills. Truth be told, switching something as simple as your light source can significantly shrink your carbon footprint while reducing your energy bills. Using LED lights in place of other lighting technologies is a “bright idea” (apologies, we had to take the pun opportunity). Below you’ll find three ways LED lights are superior to others–but first, a bit of history about the technology behind these marvelous little electric lamps.

What is the technology behind the Light Emitting Diode (LED)?

From Small Beginnings to Small Wonders

What happens inside of an LED when it’s active is called electroluminescence. It’s a phenomenon that occurs when an electric current passes through material that gives off light. It was discovered in 1907 by HJ Round, but it wasn’t encapsulated into a practical apparatus until decades later. The first commercially available LED product was the SNX-100, developed by Texas Instruments. With thorough research and development, the marvel of the LED saw exponential light output. It followed a prediction model called Haitz’s Law, named for Roland Haitz. The little light eventually became a household technology within calculators, telephones, radios, watches, and other devices. LED lights also became staples for commercial applications that needed robust lighting fixtures for use in parking lot lights, traffic lights, and other systems.

4 Reasons Why That Matters

It’s great that the technology behind these magical little lights has catapulted in the past 50 years, but what do the benefits of LED lights matter to you? Why should a light be interesting? Here’s why:

Significant Longevity

The combination of research, design, and innovation has propelled this newer light bulb at the forefront of “green living.” A current 10-watt LED bulb can outlast a 60-watt incandescent bulb approximately 21 times its lifespan. This fact alone propels LED lights beyond the worth of a regular bulb. Plus, a 10-watt bulb can produce the same level of lumens as a 60-watt incandescent–you spend less energy and get the same result. Kind of a win-win to us!

Significant Savings

The price tag for an incandescent bulb is incredibly attractive–a dollar over LED’s hefty 8. However, the savings ring in through energy consumption and bulb price long-term. As before, a single LED bulb utilizes a sixth of the wattage in comparison to its lighting brethren, and one bulb will outlast 21 standard bulbs! We’re sure you’d prefer spending 8 dollars once than one dollar over 20 times…unless you prefer spending more money? The LED has fantastic total cost of ownership (TOC) since they last much longer than competing bulbs.

LED lights apply to a range of technologies other than just a bulb. They’re instrumental in displays for technology and sensory input–your television remote control wouldn’t work without ’em! They’re all the rage now for cities as well–commercial outdoor solar lights use LED fixtures because of the light’s efficiency, color reproduction, and no toxic materials. It’s all because of the technology behind the LED.

A problem with competing light technologies is the level of toxic materials used in construction of the light. Mercury, sodium, lead–all these toxic materials and more need proper recycling to keep them from harming the environment. Nobody wants mercury leaking out of a broken light fixture. But the good news is LED lights aren’t manufactured with toxic elements! Greenshine’s lights are all Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant.

In conclusion, LED lights are:

  • cheap because of low Total Cost of Ownership
  • highly energy efficient, requiring less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same amount of light output
  • long-lasting
  • less toxic than other light technologies
  • versatile for use anywhere for a range of different applications

The benefits of LED lights outweigh the drawbacks (and beat out the competition). That’s why Greenshine New Energy is proud to use Cree LED lights–only the best–in our light fixtures for solar outdoor lights.
