How to save money on outdoor lighting

How to Save Money on Outdoor Lighting

How to save money on outdoor lightingWe know that lighting is particularly expensive, especially when it comes to commercial lighting. Those massive poles and huge lighting fixtures aren’t cheap upfront or over time.

But we’re just like you. We know you want the best bang for the buck.

So how can you save money on outdoor lighting? We’re glad you asked. Read further, because only 5 minutes of your time can possibly save you thousands.

Here’s How to Save Money on Outdoor Lighting

As before, public lighting isn’t cheap. There’s the cost of materials, the labor involved for installation, trenching and wiring, and then the monthly bills of drawing power. Bills add up!

We’ve seen projects that skyrocket into literally millions of dollars. That’s quite the price tag for just being able to see properly at night. The reason for such a high price tag is oftentimes outdoor lighting requires permits, trenching, hidden fees, and plenty of other tacked-on prices that can complicate bills quickly.

But we’ve got a trade secret to reduce your overall installation bill by a lovely 20%. Here’s how:

You can save money on lighting by purchasing outdoor solar parking lights! These lights save on installation, trenching, wiring, and energy bills. Traditional forms of lighting, like high-pressure sodium lights, are often more expensive when you consider the costs of installation and trenching.

You might be wondering, how much can I save per light, then?

The average costs for trenching and wiring just one light that typically costs 3 thousand dollars can tack on an additional 3.5 thousand dollars.

What else do you save with solar lights?

Perfect question. Along with saving a lot of money on commercial lights outdoors from trenching and wiring, solar lights save money over time because there are no energy bills you’ll need to pay.

There’s no costs to solar energy. We’re a big fan of that and we’re sure you are too.

In comparison, only 20 high-pressure sodium lights run at 4170 hours per year will cost 3,350 dollars according to the Dark Sky Society Calculator. That’s an expensive number just to operate the lights above a parking lot. Over the course of 5 years, those 20 lights will rack up a bill of 16,750 dollars.

Or, once again, you could go with solar and save a lot of money on outdoor lighting instead. Buy yourself a boat for making smart decisions.

Additional Benefits

Along with saving money, here are other benefits you get when choosing solar for your outdoor lighting. You might be surprised at all the benefits solar can offer.

Making Money–Tax Incentives Galore

We’re already mentioned how to save money on outdoor lighting. Solar skips a lot of the bills you’d regularly have to pay for traditional lighting, and typically those savings hit on day one.

Would you like to learn how solar can earn you money back, too?

The DSIRE site lists state tax incentives for purchasing solar. Do your research to find what money you can make back–after you’ve already saved several thousands of dollars on your lighting project.

You can also take advantage of the federal solar tax credit. Unfortunately, the total percentage you’ll receive back diminishes every year. For 2020, it’s 26%. Your investment not only saved you money on outdoor lighting, but it made you money.

True-Color Bulbs

A lot of light technology tends to cast an ugly yellow color on parking lots. We’re sure you’ve seen HPS somewhere in your travels–they used to be very popular until people realized how they could save a lot more money with solar.

A yellow light isn’t fantastic for visibility–or for identifying your own car, sometimes. Red tends to show up as black under an HPS light. You can avoid this odd color by getting lighting with a high color rendering index (CRI).

If you want lighting with high CRI, it’s important to purchase LED fixtures that produce a much brighter, more natural color to cast on objects and people.

The good news is we happen to use CREE LED fixtures with extremely high CRI, so all subjects underneath the lighting fixture will have a natural look to them.

Environmentally-Friendly Lighting Solutions

Solar is an incredibly green renewable energy source. You’ve already learned how to save 20% on outdoor lighting, how to make 26% of your purchase back, and how to save money on energy bills. How about saving the environment, too?

Carbon emissions contribute heavily to global warming, which affects our health, damages our environment, and causes a greater energy crisis on the horizon.

Luckily, a lot of cities and businesses have already made the switch to solar. Since solar-powered lighting is more financially viable than fossil fuels already, people are turning on to saving money while protecting the environment.

Get some attention from younger generations and green-energy advocates by purchasing the most environmentally-friendly outdoor lighting on the market.

Solar Lighting in a Nutshell

So, to save money on outdoor lighting, the best option to choose is solar because:

  • you save 20% on overall installation costs on day one
  • you save more over 5 years because of zero energy bills
  • you save on maintenance because solar lights need very little
  • you get more natural, brighter lighting because of LED fixtures
  • you actually make money back through tax incentives
  • you help save the environment, too!

Greenshine New Energy is a solar LED lighting corporation based in Lake Forest, California. We’re often lauded as one of the most successful companies in the renewable energy space because of our two goals with our business–save you money and protect the environment. We do both pretty well.

What’s the Best Kind of Canopy or Shelter Lighting for the Money?

solar canopy lighting

When you’re out shopping for a product, we’re sure you want something that ticks all the checkboxes–something convenient and easy to work with that fits your needs perfectly but doesn’t sap your vacation money. That’s a kind of universal desire across all markets, and the price is probably the most important aspect for any purchase. The same goes for lighting projects. Although lighting doesn’t attract a crowd or go viral like a cat video would, nobody would mind saving a few dollars here and there when they’re deciding on a purchase for an expensive lighting project.

But what if we said you could save several thousands of dollars?

If you’re in the market for canopy lighting, you stopped at the right place. Greenshine New Energy specializes in high-quality, commercial-grade lighting for a range of purposes–mostly just to see things in bright light when the sun isn’t up. But the secret we’ve got is that we use solar canopy lighting to save you money. Let’s dive into the facts about lighting paired with solar panels that take advantage of renewable energy.

Why Solar Canopy Lighting is Much Cheaper

It’s a no-brainer that solar lighting pulls power from the sun–that’s one of the reasons why this unique lighting is much cheaper. You don’t have to concern yourself with monthly energy bills that sap away your food budget. A typical high-pressure sodium (HPS) light will cost you about 10 dollars per month for operation, whereas a solar canopy light will cost you…well, nothing. Each light doesn’t draw power from the main power grid, and so rest assured you won’t have constant monetary upkeep. With a system of 10 HPS lights, the energy costs leap to 6 thousand dollars over the course of 5 years.

One of the largest pain points we’ve seen from several thousands of projects we’ve installed is the cost for trenching and wiring. Lights on average can cost about 3,500 dollars a pop, but connecting them can nearly double your entire bill. Let’s assume a 100-foot trenching from the main power source must be dug with poles that are spaced 80 feet apart. Just for 10 lights the cost for trenching tacks on about 35 thousand dollars. Plus, if your project is being installed in an area with concrete already in place, that adds on additional expenses just to break up and repave the concrete. Or, if you prefer, skip all that and go with solar.

Isn’t a Solar Panel Much More Expensive?

It used to be! Early solar cells were not worth the investment, but since the 1970s the tech behind photovoltaics has pushed that price tag to lower numbers. The price of a solar cell in the 1970s was about 75 dollars per watt of energy converted.

Curious to know what today’s price per watt is? About 75 cents.

We won’t hide the truth–buying solar canopy lighting is more expensive, but in 5 years you’ll be happy with the savings. Take the several thousands of dollars saved and invest it. Retire early with a lavish retirement party. Buy yourself some “I made the best decision” gifts. That’s just a side benefit of purchasing the best kind of lighting for the money that you’ll find at Greenshine.

What Else Do You Save?

Greenshine uses LED light fixtures on all our systems. How does this benefit you? A lot of competing light fixtures have lifespans that pale in comparison to LED. HPS fixtures will last approximately 25 thousand hours. LEDs outlive HPS lights with a whopping 50 thousand hours. So when expensive (and toxic!) HPS fixtures burn out, your LED lights will shine on for another 25k hours. The secret is within the fantastic development behind LEDs that’s taken decades to develop. Now we use LEDs to light up the night and make the responsible financier smile at the money saved instead of frown at a lengthy bill. You also save the environment, too! Every solar canopy light uses 0 energy from fossil fuels. Kind of a package deal if you ask us.

Is Solar Power Reliable?

It’s just as reliable as the sun rising and setting. When the sun no longer rises, renewable energy sources will be the least of our problems.  As for now, rest assured that the 5000+ projects we have across the United States that are within their life expectancy are doing their jobs well. For areas that use solar shelter or canopy lighting in generally overcast environments, we develop robust systems that combat the darker skies so your lights won’t burn out of energy. All projects comply with the “Buy American” act, meaning at least 51% of materials are resourced in the United States. We stand by our products with a conviction–they’re highly efficient, incredibly bright, and easy on the wallet long term. Take a look at our case studies on solar canopy lighting if you’re still not convinced–some of them saved our customers nearly half a million dollars.

In Conclusion…

We hope our brief foray into solar canopy or shelter lighting reveals what solar can do for your business. Where there’s a sun, there’s a promise for solar lighting which is best for the money. Reduce your bills and carbon footprint while stuffing your wallet. Our team is in place and ready to find the best lighting solution for you that will save you buckets of bucks. How Temporary Parking Lot Lights Can Solve Debilitating Problems

temporary parking lot lights

Recently, the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) had a power outage that affected several terminals, halted their operations, caused major security problems throughout nearly the entire airport, and forced 21 airlines  to cancel their flights in the span of a few hours. As an airport that sees traffic of 70 million commuters per year, approximately 191 thousand daily on average, safety is an utmost at LAX. A power outage in the middle of transportation operations severely hampers travel for everyone. The power was disrupted approximately 7:30 PM, leaving many stranded and some in the dark, literally. Many passengers needed to be rescreened for security, but thankfully everyone was safe with the power outage. Costly underground power line repair work began the next day. Still, it goes to show that preparation for all emergencies is needed.

While a myriad of problems arose for the airport, power outages such as the one at LAX are a clear problem of how businesses can benefit from solar LED lighting. We discuss here how these special lights can keep commuters safe when Murphy’s Law takes affect–if it can happen, it will, so it’s best to be prepared for the worst. This 5-minute read reveals the truth behind the convenience and monetary value with this specific kind of lighting and how businesses should prepare for even the slightest hiccup.

Temporary Parking Lot Lights (and Their Benefits)

Versatility in a Light

Imagine you’re walking to your car after sundown in a parking lot and suddenly all power drops, bathing the entire lot in darkness. Never an ideal situation. But this is one of the reasons why Greenshine is in the business of temporary parking lot lights–when the power goes out, the lights stay on, and they’re powerful enough to stay on for an entire week! A combination of mono-crystalline solar panels and deep-cycle acid batteries ensures that at night, management can wheel in temporary parking lot lights to keep commuters safe and on their way. They’re versatile enough that they can be lifted anywhere needed–during construction, in the middle of streetways where traffic may be backed up because of low visibility, or in front of airport terminals to keep people moving where they need to go. Some of our lights, such as the Porta series of lights and mobile solar towers, can be moved by forklift or two people, respectively. Wire-free operation is what they’re known for, and when the underground power sources fail (for whatever reason), these convenient lights are ready to bestow bright LED illumination for the masses. Plus, with beefy batteries, they’re well-equipped to last multiple nights without more charging.

Easily Moved with a Forklift or Two People

We’re sure project managers often times can’t have a lighting system that’s permanently stuck in the ground just for a construction zone. Permanent lights installed into the ground aren’t going to solve the problem of needing sufficient lighting to move from place to place. The solution to this kind of problem requires portability, and that’s specifically why we carry our Portas and Mobile Solar Light Towers.

airport perimeter lighting
A light on wheels. What a “bright” idea.

A strong benefit with a temporary lighting solution is that these lights have no permanent connection underground. In short, place ’em where you need ’em! One of our recent projects with Lake Elsinore details how the city used temporary parking lot lights in numerous projects to light specific areas during construction. Not only were they inexpensive enough to reduce their expected bills to pay, they moved the lights throughout different projects to work at all hours of the night. They moved them from spot to spot needing only two people to transport them around their construction lot!

Don’t Bother Digging to Connect ‘Em!

We’ll admit that a solar light is more expensive than a standard light–we’re showing our hand of cards, here. However, what many don’t recognize is the hidden prices for installation and wiring. A temporary parking lot light has no tether to power, so any underground work that needs to be done in order to install lighting can be skipped, saving businesses and companies several thousands of dollars. In total costs, a solar LED lighting system can save businesses and municipalities over 50% on a per-light basis. We’re sure folks like to save money long-term making the right choices when it comes to something as simple as lighting. And with the proper application of a solar street light, you can ensure you won’t be inundated with costly energy bills every month. That drops the bottom line and makes room in the budget for other important things–time and money are never trivial matters in project management. We’ve had customers aplenty seeking lighting solutions that ultimately break the bank. Often times, on day 1 we save our customers money through our lighting systems that avoid trenching labor fees. We saved one customer half a million dollars with one of our installations. That’s part of the total package received with the advent of solar technology we offer at Greenshine.

Whether the lighting system you want is temporary or permanent, our lighting solutions are fantastic to lower your costs, keep commuters safe whenever needed, and also to promote a greener future. We hear that the news media outlets love to scope out businesses with a green initiative too, so maybe if you save money going solar, you can even get the attention of the local masses through a bit of news. If you’d like to learn about how you can save some green while going green, drop us a line and we’ll be in touch shortly.

How Solar Powered Street Lighting Saves Your City Money

solar LED street lights and Solar Powered Street Lighting

We’re sure founding and developing a city is never an easy thing. Our hats go off to mayors, city planners, budget wizards, and other key figures in planning to find the best ways to support a city’s operations. We’ll leave the expert work up to you. However, we’re doing meticulous research behind our doors in how to find the best ways to cut corners in energy spending for your city, and the good news is that we’ve slashed city budgets by several thousands of dollars in the past. We’ve got a secret in energy that can let your city prosper, and the answer is in using solar powered street lighting. Read on and we’ll give you the cheat-sheet on how to save more money for your city.

Solar Street Lights Save Energy Bills

There are three ways that these marvelous wonders of science cut your bills significantly. The first method is in that they don’t draw power from the main grid, potentially using energy you don’t need to use. Drawing the power of the sun will let you skip out on each monthly bill.

The second method that solar powered street lighting uses to save you money is through being self-sufficient. Each solar light doesn’t need connectivity to the main power grid, so that means project managers and city planners can skip paying the trenching, wiring, and labor fees altogether. The average price percentage saved ranges from 15 to 20 percent, depending on the project. Put the saved money towards a company party, we won’t tell.

The third method that solar lights save your city money is via tax credits. The current solar tax credit extension can provide a 30 percent return on the initial solar investment–not exactly saving money, but getting money back is always a positive thing. So that’s specifically why we stand by solar street lighting as a method of lighting your city the economical way without cutting corners.

Safety in Solar LED Lights

One technology we haven’t touched on here is in the method of how we light a public area. Our refined methods don’t just use any light slapped at the top of a pole to keep public areas lit. We use solar street LED lights. On top of the money saved from going solar, using LED lights is a great boon to public areas since LEDs are so bright. Alternative methods of lighting tend to be particularly ugly, casting subjects in a stinky yellow light. LED lights have more accurate color reproduction–so what appears to be brown under, say, high pressure sodium lights, will actually have a more natural color. It’s just an extra touch of safety added to the kind of lights we’ve backed for over ten years. We’ve helped pedestrians and commuters stay safe on the streets with solar street LED lights time after time. Saving money and increasing safety are just two of our specialties.

The method of our madness lies in the awesome technology of LED bulbs. We use Cree LED lights in our fixtures for accurate color reproduction with low energy usage. It’s a merging of the best technologies on the market, and we’re proud to offer a solution like solar powered street lighting for public projects.

We’re part of a revolution in saving money, increasing safety, and going green. Take a gander at how your growing city can revolutionize your energy savings by sticking with solar street LED lights. We’re prepared to give you a full assessment for your project. Contact us to learn more.

Switching to solar energy might be a topic that some building owners and project managers have considered in the past but haven’t decided on entirely. Solar might be a new venture, or perhaps there’s a question of reliability, especially when there’s a necessary reliance on the sun. We’re here to quell concerns for solar outdoor lighting, especially when it comes to questions about reliability, cost, effectiveness, and return on investment.

Solar Outdoor Lighting Saves More Money Than You Think

Truth be told, outdoor solar lights are more cost-effective than you may think. They’re cheaper than traditional lighting due to smaller bills because they don’t need trenching. Imagine setting up an entire lighting system of 10 lights, trenching for each, connecting the wiring, and having to pay for each light. Just the trenching alone for this 10-light system costs over 30 thousand dollars. Well, we can save you that money and headache by offering solar! No trenching needed. We’ve saved businesses in the past several thousands of dollars for their lighting solutions because they were able to skip the pricing on trenches.

Save Even More with Saving on Bills

The added bonus with our solar outdoor lights are that we combine them with Cree LED bulbs. A combination of using high-output, low-energy consumption light bulbs with a solar panel means that you’re getting the most for your energy–all while paying a very low energy bill of zero dollars. Put that money towards further business development, or hold an office party to celebrate opening doors. A single high-pressure sodium light can cost hundreds of dollars per year

Save Money, then Make Money with Solar

Outdoor solar lighting comes with hidden benefits that you’ll have to plunder. State and federal tax credits are available, and these can earn you money back to put further into business development. It takes a small bit of research on your part, but think of the potential return-on-investment with such an effort. If your solar lighting costs you 30 thousand and you do the tax paperwork to save you 30 percent, you basically filled out forms to earn 9 thousand dollars. A bit of a sweet little deal, but it takes the knowledge and effort in order to earn that money.

We like to think of ourselves as the best money-savers for businesses on the block. If you have a lighting project on the horizon for your building, look into solar. You’ll be surprised to find out how much money the sun can save and make for your business. Contact us to learn more, or read up on how LEDs have developed if you wish.

solar programs solar rebates

What’s in it for Me? Solar Rebates, Incentives, and Programs, Oh My!

solar programs solar rebates

There’s a literal wealth beyond all the benefits that solar energy brings to the table, and believe us, you’ll want to know the many other ways that making the switch to solar can benefit you. We’ve got the lowdown on solar rebates, programs to give you money back on your taxes, and incentives that turn the financial impact of using solar panels into a much greener opportunity. Listed below are the details!

The Solar Investment Tax Credit Ends Soon

A few years ago, the solar industry received a wonderful extension of the Solar Investment Tax Credit, or ITC. A great solar incentive for both businesses and homeowners, it allows anyone to receive 30 percent back of the cost of solar panel installation from their taxes for the next year. That’s an opportunity to save several thousands of dollars for solar adopters. If your solar lighting system costs ten thousand dollars, you’ll receive 3 thousand back. The unfortunate part is that it diminishes every year. Currently, it’s at 30 percent. In the near future, it will reduce itself. It’s unknown if the price of solar will drop enough to make up for the reduction in tax credit, so the best time to take advantage of the solar rebate is actually now. This kind of solar incentive can fatten your wallet. Maybe come tax time you can treat yourself to a few hundred steak dinners in a row. That’s a reward a lot of us will gladly take.

What in the Heck is a SREC?

A Solar Renewable Energy Credit (SREC) is a unit of solar energy totaling 1,000 kilowatts per hour. Consider them a commodity–they’re often sellable to energy companies for a pretty penny. However, they’re based on a market price so the more abundant SRECs are, the less return you’ll get on them. So if you’re the only individual on the block with a SREC, chances are you can sell it back to an energy company–money for basically doing nothing. You can let the solar panels power your house and pay your bills at the same time. Just be aware that you’re required to register your solar installation in order to get the benefits, and each state has different laws in regards to registration.

Super Solar Savings by State

Be sure to research what your state might provide in terms of solar incentives! Each state has itrs own solar rebates and small avenues where you can claim tax benefits or money simply by going solar. Some states have cash rebates you can apply for. There are also solar programs called Performance-Based Incentives where solar adopters are actually paid to produce a certain energy threshold. There are, as with anything, several rules and regulations that must be adhered to in order to see the benefits produced.

We think that these nifty solar rebates are, by far, strong enough reasons to go solar. The future seems less expensive, and it lies with using our own sun to power our lights. We hope you’ve enjoyed these small bits of information if you’re looking to go to solar. Contact us to learn more about what we do at Greenshine New Energy.

Brilliant Ideas for Beautiful and Functional Solar Lighting

Commercial solar lighting has quickly become one of the most popular tools for innovation in America. Municipalities and businesses are switching over to solar lighting as a cost-effective and efficient solution to reduce their energy bills and take part in the green movement. Here are a few unique application ideas where you can install outdoor solar lights.

Applications for Outdoor Solar Lights

Pathway Lighting

Pathway solar lighting is very popular among environmentalists due to its renewable energy source and ability to preserve the natural environment by not adding any light pollution. Installing and maintaining the light posts is easier to ever thanks to solar lighting systems off-grid system, which saves upfront on trenching and long term energy and maintenance bills.

Greenshine produces solar pathway lighting with durable LED lights that can not only outshine traditional lamp posts, but will cost nothing in the electricity bill of the district. These solar pathway lighting posts contain a solar panel, and are completely autonomous. To have a beautiful and durable light in your favorite park or street, ask your local officials to obtain these marvels of technology.

Bike Lane Lighting

Much like pathway lighting, bike lane lighting provides guidance to outdoor enthusiasts. However, it is maybe even more important to have strong and durable light on bike lanes. Cyclists move fast, so being able to see potential obstacles in time is paramount. Solar lighting collects sunlight during the day and uses the stored energy for lighting the pathway during the night.

Perimeter Lighting

Perimeter lighting uses powerful LED floodlights to illuminate the perimeter of a storage yard, boat dock, military bases, etc. A large advantage of solar-powered perimeter lighting is that even during a power outage, these units are independent of one another or any central grid, so they will resume functioning. This type of lighting is best when you need to illuminate a large, spacious area and ensure the safety of your community by guaranteeing continuous light even in the most dire conditions.

Landscape Lighting

Landscape lighting is dually decorative and function, serving as a function of beauty and safety. Bollard lights are a type of autonomous, decorative light mainly used for lighting pathways and gardens.  Solar projector lights and solar washer lights are used for illuminating monuments or landscapes in parks. Projectors are small and rounded, but they have powerful beams that provide ample light to light the surrounding area. Similarly, washer lights are in the shape of a rod, similar to a standard neon light.

Parking Lot Lighting

Parking lots are the most common and sought after type of solar street light. If you drive at night,  you want your parking lot to be properly lit to ensure the safety of you and your personal belongings. Greenshine offers an amazing parking lot lighting system  completely powered by solar energy that include strong, durable LED lights that will perfectly illuminate your parking lot for the night.

Sign Lighting

If you are a business owner, you know the importance of marketing and how a sign can benefit your business in multiple of ways. Illuminate your sign with a flood of pure LED light.

Roadways & Highways

Roadway and highway lighting is a major application of solar lighting. Most commercial grade solar lights can be easily installed on the side of roadways and highways since there is no underground wiring or trenching involved, making the installation process quick and easy.

Airports are a great place to install solar outdoor lighting systems, since they provide safety for planes and workers at night. Our engineers can design these lights to line the runway and optimize the distribution pattern to ensure maximum lighting for the layout of the airport. Greenshine designed an airport lighting project where we installed dark sky compliant solar lights on the main road to provide the safety and security the project demanded.

Parks & Playgrounds

Solar park lighting has recently become very popular among municipalities across the country, because it is a green technology that produces little light pollution and preserves the natural environment. Since solar lights are off the grid, installing these lights near a playground is perfect as they can be easily installed without major construction to the playground area. Lighting up parks and playgrounds will increase attendance to these facilities and allow park departments to host more events at these locations in the early morning or at night.

One popular area for solar lighting is hospitals since they can continue operating during the installation phase of these lights. The dusk-to-dawn technology of these lights are perfect for hospitals since they can set the exact time for the lights to turn on and off for efficient energy use. The most popular types of lights for hospitals are solar parking lot lighting and perimeter lighting so patients and their guests can feel safe and secure even at night. Last year, Greenshine installed 50 solar parking lot lights for the Palomar Hospital in Escondido, CA, saving them an initial $500,000 in upfront costs.

schools & universities

Many schools and universities have recently been choosing to use solar lighting systems because they save schools roughly $3000 over a 10 year period compared to traditional lights, which the schools can use to reinvest in their students. These institutions typically choose to install solar parking lot, security, and pathway lights for their projects. Since solar outdoor lights use LED technology, they are higher quality and more energy efficient, allowing these schools to install less and save more in upfront costs.
solar powered states, solar street lights

Solar Powered States

Solar power is on the rise in America and the International Energy Agency predicts that solar power will make 16% of the world’s electricity by 2050.

That’s quite a lot of energy and it got us thinking, what would it actually take to make 100% of the world’s electricity via solar power? Could America actually power the world with solar panels? And what could each state power if we filled them with solar panels? We crunched the numbers and came up with some interesting results.

No surprises but the largest states of Alaska, Texas, and California can house the most solar panels and also produce the most power with Alaska being able to generate a whopping 1 trillion kilowatts of energy, Texas 450 billion kilowatts, and California 274 billion kilowatts from just 4 hours of sunlight in a day.

Feeling neighborly? From Europe to the United Arab Emirates, each individual state can meet a wide range of countries energy needs for an entire year from just four hours of sunlight! Alaska can power Russia for an entire year, Texas could power France, New York Rwanda, and California Saudi Arabia to name but a few.

When it comes to powering the world, if America was one giant solar panel it would take just 16 hours of sunlight to power the entire world for 1 year. In 1 year it could power 105 years of energy use in the world.

solar power by state

So there you have it. America could power the world for a whopping 105 years, Texas can happily watch the Dallas Cowboys till the end of time, and if California can reach 88 mph, they can time travel over 200,000 times all thanks to solar energy.

California’s Bright Future: The Solar Mandate

On May 9th, the Sunshine State became the first to require a solar installation on new housing. This historic development is that latest sign that solar energy is gaining traction around the U.S., hopefully setting precedent for many states to come.

The California Energy Commission unanimously passed the California solar mandate that requires all new housing developments up to 3 stories to include some solar energy installation in the home. This is apart of California’s goal to have 50% of their electricity to come from non carbon sources by 2030 and cutting down greenhouse emissions by 40%. Under this mandate, builders must either include individual solar panels on homes or attach groups of home to a shared power system. Homeowners will either pay for this new power source inclusively in the initial housing price or in a monthly fee.

According the the Commission, this plan is estimated to use 53% less energy than under the 2016 standards, majorly progressing towards their 2030 goal. In addition, greenhouse gases are expected to decrease by 700,000 metric tons due to this solar mandate.

How does this plan affect the average homeowner? Let’s address the two main concerns of this plan: the quality of energy and the costs.

  1. Solar panels are roughly suppose to provide about 60-70% of quality energy for the average home. For those concerned about the colder months, solar panels will still produce energy on cloud-filled days and actually increase output in colder temperatures. To provide even more insurance, the mandate dictates that houses would still be attached to a power grid to ensure a constant supply of energy among all weather conditions.
  2. The costs associated with this plan are negligible as the savings outweighs the costs overtime. While the initial cost of construction is estimated to increase about $10,000, environmental economists predict solar efficiency will save homeowners around $19,000 on electric bills over 30 years, averaging at $80 per month.

The California solar mandate made a giant step towards sustainable consumption and paves the future for solar energy. From solar panels to solar street lights to even solar schools, the market for solar is growing and demands attention. And it’s finally receiving the attention it deserves.

All over the world, countries are making great strides to embrace renewable energy as a main source of energy. Morocco has built an impressive new solar installation that currently stands as the largest solar installation in the world. Countries all over Europe are replacing giant sums of energy, anywhere from a third to half, with solar. Now cheaper than fossil fuels, solar is taking over the industry.

The United States should take precedent from these countries to more heavily invest in solar. In fact, our nation alone has the capacity to power major players on the world stage. Alaska can power Russia for an entire year, Texas could power France, New York Rwanda, and California Saudi Arabia to name but a few. California and its’ energy-friendly policies are raising the bar to encourage other states to take the steps towards sustainable living and is proving that investing in solar is worth it.
